• A woman died whilst using her phone after she veered across a slip road into the path of another vehicle.
  
  
• A cyclist died after being hit by a car - the driver later admitted he had been on his mobile at the time of the accident.

To prevent further tragedies like this happening, the police are planning to take stern action to ensure drivers don't use their Mobile phones whilst driving, these include setting-up random checkpoints and patrolling in unmarked cars.

The law does not ban the use of mobile phones in cars - drivers can still talk on the phone provided they are NOT holding the phone to their ear. Drivers are PERMITTED to use hands-Free car kits for speaking on their mobiles.

As spokesperson for leading Insurance company Direct Line stated that anyone with a conviction for using a mobile phone in the car will see their insurance premium rise by around 10% - for a young driver paying £1,000/year, this will be £100!

The spokesperson also said that recent tests at a research transport laboratory showed that the reactions of a driver holding a mobile phone were worse than that of someone over the legal limit for alcohol. The research also showed that the reactions of a driver on the phone were 50% slower than under normal conditions.
